My Two Cents on Latinos

Hispanic Population in the United States: 1970 to 2050

Hispanic Population in the United States: 1970 to 2050

Yesterday I was a panelist in a Faculty and Staff Meet & Greet for Multicultural students at Emerson College. In my research I found interesting data such as the growth of the Latinos in the U.S. that is projected to double up by the year 2050. Even though the U.S. has the largest concentration of Latinos in the world it seems that Americans are not that familiar with us. We cannot let that continue to happen  so I’m extending an invitation to you, yes, to you and contribute your two cents on Latino Population by finishing the sentence “Proud to be (or know) Latinos Because….”. I’d welcome your input even if you are a Latino-at-heart or have experiences with the Latino community that will shed a better understanding of our culture. Your two cents can be in the form of stories, pictures, movies, jokes, etc. and let’s see of we can get our first 11 Latin American countries represented in the next few weeks.

My first two cents on Guatemala, my home country.  Since the video is in Spanish, the translation follows.  See you soon. -Alma Pellecer

Proud to be “Chapin” (Guatemalan)

Pinned at the heart of the continent
Amidst large summits, amidst jungle and streams
And you are in awe when contemplating its magnificence
And its natural beauty
Spring is in the heart, a helping hand at all times
The nobility of a country that work with tenacity
And you are proud to be who you are
Never forget what runs in your veins

You are a Guatemalan of honor
You are a Guatemalan of courage
Because you are the seed that germinates freedom
You are a living part of the land of the “Quetzal” (Guatemala national bird)
You are a hard-working Guatemalan
You are a winner Guatemalan
The marimba (traditional instrument), the tamales (traditional food),
The scenery, your ideals, Steady to the end, Proud to be Chapin
Lives in your heart that beats to the rhythm of the “son” (traditional dance)
And when looking at the sky you thank the Creator who gave you the privilege to be born here
Never forget you are a Guatemalan of honor
Never forget you are a Guatemalan of courage
You are a hard-working Guatemalan
You are a winner Guatemalan

The marimba, the tamales,
The scenery, your ideals, Steady to the end, Proud to be Chapin
Guatemala is my country, your country, and you know it
If you want to see changes, start with yourself, you know
Because there are many who say what needs to be done but never do a thing, they only talk nonsense

The time has come to change attitudes
Working all together, the experienced and the youth
Guatemala is our land, you better get that
That we are the ones who have the power in our hands
With decision and courage, There is no time to waste.
You are a hard-working Guatemalan
You are a winner Guatemalan
The marimba, the tamales, the scenery, your ideals,
Steady to the end
Proud …

Guate. (Guatemala), Guate.

Let your chest be filled with pride and love when shouting out to the wind:

I am Chapin, I am Chapin
